Cold Cable In New Orleans

lwe_3158.jpg

The folks at Southwire have a very cool project. They are installing their HTS cable (Triax). This is technology you have to see to believe. The cable will be installed in the Metairie area of New Orleans. Go talk to David Lindsay about it. You will be amazed at how this technology has matured.

How Low Is Your Transmission Line?

lwe_3149.jpg

Go to Alcan’s booth. Ask them to show you their new transmission line technology. They have advanced conductors.

They have monitors for the line that lets you transfer more power down the line without re-conductoring. Its magic Mike Francher will fill you in. That is all I am going to say you have to visit them. Also, they are winning my booth toy so far let Mike show you what I found. It is toooooo Cool.

Mother Load of Transmission Technologies

Have you seen the Hubble Booth - how could you miss it. It is huge. Its jam-packed with technology. Look for the wind turbine model. My friend Dick Erdel took me all through the booth. Hubble had to have 4 semi-trucks to bring all this stuff here. It took them 5 days to fill their 4,000 sq ft.

They have a real neat booth toy too. They are giving away a Bass Pro certificate to some lucky person or persons. Ask about it.

HVDC Attracts Lots of Interest

lwe_3145.jpg

I am an HVDC junkie. The technology is addictive. I found a valve module at ABB’s booth and two of my HVDC friends were there ahead of me. Ben Mehraban (AEP) and Aftab Khan (ABB) were inspecting the components. We had a great time visiting. If you want to find out about the technology talk to ABB.

Super Conducting Is Super Coooool

lwe_3143.jpg

American Superconductor has a way cool project and they are talking about. My buddy Jack McCall took me through a project called Tres Amigas. It is going to have superconducting underground cable system connecting the HVDC portion of the project. The cables will transfer over 5,000MW or more this way. Go to Jack and ask about it. He is excited.

Money Is Always Good

lwe_3161.jpg

Remember the old style phone booth? What do you mean phone booth. Way back in the dark ages, telephones were kept in glass and wooden housings. You went inside and put coins in the phone and made your call. (Superman changed clothes in there too). Well,I saw one on the floor today at the MacLean Power System booth. It was full of money and a fan was blowing the money around. Rumor has it someone will get in there and start grabbing. I’ll have to check this out further.

Talk About HOT WHEELS!!!

lwe_3101.jpg

Go to the Siemens exhibit! Run - don’t walk. They have a really cool smart chopper there. You can climb all over it. They will even take your photo (green screen). You can be a biker dude - really impress your friends.

I wanted everyone to see the set up. I’ll download my photo and post it later. While you are there sign up for the technology tour in the dome.

Evolution of Gas - Hummmm

lwe_3090.jpg

My friends at HVB-AE Power Systems always come up with something to get my attention. I stopped by today and talked with Stephanie Hayden. We have known each other for many years and it is always great to visit with her. The theme of their booth is the evolution of the gas circuit breaker.

I am a history buff and this was fascinating, but more so was where we are going next. Ask them about the gasless power circuit breaker. I think it should prove interesting.

Great Idea

lwe_3085.jpg

PES had a great idea that I appreciated today. Lunch was brought in. They had a ton of food including chocolate chip cookies. I must say I never met a chocolate chip cookie I didn’t like. But getting back to the great idea, time is so precious. The floor is so demanding that it is really nice to be able to grab some food and keep on trucking.

Booth Toys

lwe_3099.jpg

I stopped at the MR booth to talk with Ray Williams. MR (Reinhausen) has been making LTCs for a long time and has a lot of technology and have some new ideas to talk about.

They have a really cool toy too. The LED plastic cube. It can be dropped in a friend’s drink (after they have had several drinks under their belt). It drive your friends crazy with the colored lights. Go talk to Ray and his friends.
